PAHANG DUN | The Pahang legislative assembly today approved an emergency motion rejecting the proposed ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd).
The motion was tabled by the Culture, Unity, Social Welfare and Women and Family Development Committee chairperson Shahaniza Shamsuddin.
Shahril Azman Al-Hafiz (PAS-Jengka), when speaking during the debate, said the federal government should give up any attempt to ratify the convention to maintain harmony in the country.
Former Pahang menteri besar Adnan Yaakob (BN-Pelangai) said it was not necessary to ratify the Icerd because it can have a negative impact on racial relations in the country.
All the 42 assemblypersons voted for the motion.
