PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah today reminded the country’s leaders that the people will suffer if there is a lack of trust and integrity in the way they fulfil their duties.
“Poverty will worsen when leaders are only focused on accumulating material wealth through unjust and dubious methods and denying the rights of the people,” he said at the national Maulidur Rasul celebration to mark Prophet Muhammad’s birthday at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.
He added that accumulating material wealth without the wealth of knowledge was an incomplete way of living.
He said this would result in the leakage of resources, stalled development and high rates of unemployment, migration, smuggling, crime and corruption, as well as other social ills.
“Public peace will be affected, political stability will be threatened, and the people will suffer even more as they are trapped in this cycle of suffering,” he said.
Sultan Nazrin added however that a country which received God’s blessing would be prosperous, peaceful and protected from conflict and disasters.
He also said it was important to take into account the views of all parties when drafting treaties or policies, especially those that addressed sensitive or controversial issues.
Today’s celebration was also attended by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa, among others. - FMT
