The Pakatan Harapan government has decided against ratifying the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd).
The Prime Minister's Office said in a two-paragraph statement that Putrajaya is committed to defending the Federal Constitution with regard to the social contract agreed to by all races.
"The Pakatan Harapan government will not ratify Icerd.
"The government will continue to defend the Federal Constitution, in which lies the social contract agreed to by representatives of all races during the forming of the nation," it added in a statement this afternoon.
In September, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad told the UN General Assembly that Malaysia will ratify six core treaties soon.
However, the spotlight was only on Icerd after Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin asked Parliament last month how this treaty would affect Article 153 of the Federal Constitution.
Following this, Umno and PAS had repeatedly voiced objections against the signing of the treaty, although it has been repeatedly pointed out that it was non-binding and would not affect the Federal Constitution.
A coalition of Malay NGOs has threatened to hold a massive rally on Dec 8 in Kuala Lumpur to protest against the ratification of Icerd. -Mkini
