PETALING JAYA: The US-based creator of the Prey application, which was blamed for tampering with PKR’s recent e-voting process in Sarawak, has refuted allegations that it is a malware and spyware application, saying it is meant to protect devices.
“Prey affirms that its Prey Anti-Theft software is not capable of carrying out the specific election tampering activities,” the company said in a statement, following allegations by the PKR election committee that several tablets used for the voting process in the Julau division had been compromised through the app.
Prey said the app was meant to protect computer devices from data loss.
It also rejected the claim that the app was used to delete data from the tablets, saying its “Remote Wipe” feature was only capable of wiping the SD card or formatting the Android device completely.
“It cannot target files specifically or modify them to alter their content,” it said.
Prey also refuted claims that the app could be used to uninstall voting applications on the tablets, manipulate voting decisions remotely and take control of the tablets remotely, similar to the remote desktop feature.
“Prey Inc confirms that its software is not capable of carrying out said activities, being that the application itself has no Remote Desktop feature, and no remote control capabilities that allow the deletion of specific applications or the ability to write or modify data in the device,” the company said.
The company however added that it was not taking legal action against those who accused the Prey app of being behind voting discrepancies, saying it believed the claims were due to misunderstanding about the software.
“Given this position, we refrain for now from pursuing further legal action,” it said. - FMT
