Selangor free water scheme tweaked, now only for B40 homes

Water tariff subsidies for Selangor households will be limited to the B40 category from 2019 onwards.
According to Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, only those registered under Putrajaya's E-Kasih programme would enjoy the 25 cubic metres of free water per household.
The Selangor government has projected that this targeted subsidy effort will save the state government approximately RM105.2 million.
Amirudin (photo), who tabled Selangor's budget for 2019 today, said the savings would be channelled to other state government welfare programmes.
Selangor introduced a water subsidy scheme in 2008 which involved a full subsidy for 20 cubic metres of water per household, regardless of income levels.
This was among the state government's ongoing Inisiatif Peduli Rakyat (IPR) programmes.
Meanwhile, Amirudin announced that the Kuala Selangor District Council will be upgraded to a municipal council while the Subang Jaya Municipal Council will be upgraded to a city council.
Developers would be required to provide community centres for the elderly in all future housing developments, as part of the aged care living programme.
Amirudin also announced that the Shah Alam Modern Arts (Sama) gallery will be set up in five years with a seed funding of RM2.5 million.  - Mkini
