Sources: MACC probing Umno MP over humanitarian projects

EXCLUSIVE | Former Tabung Haji chairperson Azeez Abdul Rahim has come under MACC's microscope again, according to sources.
Sources told Malaysiakini that the Baling MP has been implicated in an investigation over funds used in humanitarian projects organised by the Kelab Putera 1Malaysia (KP1M).
The sources, who are familiar with the probe, said the Umno lawmaker allegedly appointed firms linked to his relatives and friends as vendors to furnish items for the club's projects both in Malaysia and abroad.
"So far, MACC investigators have called in at least five individuals linked to KP1M's projects for questioning.
"They (investigators) found that the number of purchases for several humanitarian projects did not match with what the club had announced to the public,” said one of the sources.
The sources said the amount of allocation for KP1M during the years it was active reached hundreds of millions in ringgit but declined to provide an exact figure as it might impede investigations.
When contacted, MACC deputy chief commissioner of operations Azam Baki confirmed that the commission is investigating the matter.
He also confirmed that Azeez was among the persons of interest with regard to the probe, but declined to comment further.
For the record, in 2013 alone, it was reported that KP1M had carried out 34 humanitarian projects, including in Syria, Philippines, Somalia, Indonesia and Japan.
Malaysiakini has contacted Azeez for comment, while attempts to contact KP1M for comments unfruitful, as its office contact number listed on the club's Facebook page is no longer in service and its website's domain had also expired.
In September, Azeez and his brother were remanded by MACC to facilitate investigationsinto the appointment of contractors for Tabung Haji projects. - Mkini
