PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday claimed that the riot at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in USJ 25 on Monday was caused by “outsiders”, not locals.
Speaking to reporters after the 12th National Academic Awards ceremony here last night, he said this was based on preliminary information.
“This is not about Malays versus Indians. This problem was caused by people who came from elsewhere. It’s not the local people.
“Outsiders were behind it,” he said.
In an earlier statement, the prime minister had said the riot at the temple was criminal in nature and the perpetrators would be dealt with according to the law.
On accusations that the police were slow to act on the crisis, he said they had not behaved aggressively as they had to exercise caution in handling sensitive issues.
On a separate matter, Mahathir, who is chairman of Pakatan Harapan, said his party PPBM had accepted three former Johor Umno assemblymen as they were already independent and neutral.
This follows Johor PKR’s dissatisfaction over PPBM’s move to accept Rasman Ithnain (Sedili), Alwiyah Talib (Endau) and Rasleli Jahari (Johor Lama) into its fold.
