Zahid flays 'hero' Waytha for 'provocation' in Seafield temple issue

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today criticised Unity Minister P Waythamoorthy for causing a 'provocation' in relation to the violence near the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ25, Subang Jaya.
"On this issue, no one should think he is a hero for a certain religion. Moreover, the portfolio held by him is to instil unity.
"Don't use that position to create provocation among the followers of that religion or followers of other religions," Zahid said when met at the Parliament lobby today.
He added that religious harmony must be maintained in the country and the rule of law applied.
Zahid did not name Waythamoorthy explicitly and refused to take follow-up questions on this claim.
Waythamoorthy had come under fire from some groups for criticising the police over their initial assessment of the riot at the temple on Monday morning.
Selangor government official V Ganabatirau was also criticised yesterday for claiming that "Muslim groups" had attacked the temple.
In the initial confusion, the police had claimed that the riot on Monday was caused by two Indian groups.
However, it later became clear that the masked group that attacked the temple and briefly held some of the temple caretakers hostage were all from another ethnic group.
Last night, thousands of ethnic Indians gathered near the temple compound and violence occurred soon after midnight.
There are reports that a pair of motorcyclists and a Fire and Rescue Department personnel were assaulted. The fireman is currently in critical condition.
A mob also attacked the offices of MCT Bhd, the company that owns the land on which the temple is located, and set fire to several vehicles. - Mkini
