Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged party leaders to close ranks in order for the party to move forward.
“We will move forward and strengthen the party. (We need to) put a full stop on differences in opinion.
“We need be with the Umno leadership at all levels,” he told a press conference after chairing the Umno supreme council meeting today.
It is believed that Zahid was referring to differences in opinion on whether he should take leave until the conclusion of his graft trials.
Zahid was slapped with 45 criminal charges last month which include allegations of money laundering and graft. He has claimed that these charges were politically motivated.
Meanwhile, Zahid said he was confident that the party leadership has the support of its 48 MPs.
“I am confident that the 48 MPs will continue to be with us and not leave the party,” he said.
Umno won 54 seats during the May 9 elections. However, six parliamentarians have since left the party, of which two have joined Parti Warisan Sabah and while another two have moved to Bersatu.
Zahid said the main agenda of the supreme council meeting today was to discuss Putrajaya’s plans to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd).
He said Umno rejected the move because it would affect the social contract.
The council also resolved that Umno will join forces with PAS at a rally against Icerd on Nov 17 in Pasir Salak, Perak. - Mkini
