Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin needs to clarify a statement made by a cabinet member in Kelantan that MPs from the latter’s party who have not been appointed government posts would be given positions in government-linked corporations (GLC) and statutory agencies, said a group comprising former top civil servants.
G25 founding member Mohd Sheriff Mohd Kassim (above) said that this is because such appointments entail posts of chairperson and members of the boards of GLC and statutory agencies.
“If the statement is true, we hope the prime minister will also clarify what steps will be taken by his government to ensure that the political appointees meet the 'fit and proper criteria' as set out in the GLC Transformation Programme launched in 2005 to strengthen the governance system in public sector enterprises, particularly those operating in the market economy.
“It should be noted that the GLC Transformation Programme (GTP) was launched at a time when there was very low confidence on the government's management of the economy.
“Although the GTP did not prevent 1MDB and other scandals from happening, nevertheless it remains relevant as a policy tool to ensure that government's participation in the economy through the GLCs will be guided by high standards of corporate governance.
“I hope the prime minister will provide a clear clarification as it will determine whether the private sector will continue to be confident about Malaysia after we have successfully got over the coronavirus pandemic,” Sheriff said in a statement.
He did not name specifically who was the cabinet member in question who made the call for MPs be given posts in GLCs and statutory bodies.
Yesterday, while at Kompleks Kota Darulnaim in Kota Bharu, de facto Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan (photo) told the media reported that all MPs who do not presently hold positions in government will be made heads of GLCs by the Perikatan Nasional-led government.
The PAS secretary-general was quoted saying that the party has 18 MPs, with eight being ministers and deputy ministers, and one having been made the prime minister’s special envoy to the Middle East.
"This leaves nine more MPs. Alhamdulillah, I understand all government MPs will be given the responsibility to manage GLCs.
"This is because all of them are qualified. They are MPs," the Kota Bharu MP had said. - Mkini
