De facto law and parliamentary affairs minister Takiyuddin Hassan has taken the Pakatan Harapan leadership to task, saying it has failed to set the right priorities in protesting the one-day parliamentary sitting set for May 18.
"The government is aware of the views and suggestions expressed (by the PH presidential council) but believes it is premature, narrow and fails to grasp the order of priorities of the government and the state.
"Government decisions are based on current circumstances and developments, in particular those involved in controlling and ending the threat of the Covid-19 outbreak as well as taking urgent and important steps to help people deal with its short-term effects," said Takiyuddin in a statement today.
He said that in the context of the upcoming parliamentary session, the government viewed the safety of all parties involved as the main issue.
The Pakatan Harapan presidential council on Thursday said they will be sending representatives to meet with Dewan Rakyat Speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof to register their protest against the one-day Parliament sitting which has barred questions from MPs.
It also strongly protested the question-and-answer session during the sitting being disallowed and the limit of one day for the sitting.
Parliament has not met since last December and its original sitting on March 9 has been pushed back to a single-day meet on May 18.
Saying that the Perikatan Nasional government has been successful in dealing with the Covid-19 crisis through its own approach, Takiyuddin stressed that it is not ready to take risks on the matter.
"The government believes that in today's situation, we are not competing over who is more popular, but should be focussing our priorities on what is more effective," he said.
Takiyuddin added that the government would continue to be guided by the advice of the Health Ministry as well as relevant specialists in order to assure results and that its conduct is based on facts and legitimate considerations for the benefit and safety of all parties. - Mkini
