MCO-related economic decisions went through Health Ministry, says Azmin

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | All economic decisions pertaining to the movement control order (MCO) went through the Health Ministry, said International Trade and Industry Minister Azmin Ali.
He said a Health Ministry representative was also present during the cabinet special committee meetings to discuss economic measures two weeks ago.
The decisions made during these meetings were then brought to the cabinet on April 6 and 10 to be fine-tuned.
"So this process must go through the Health Ministry, which is an important ministry in giving advice to the International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) and other ministries which were involved in the additional sectors so that our efforts to curb Covid-19 is in line with that of the Health Ministry," he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.
He also thanked the Health Ministry for all its efforts in combating Covid-19 and helping Miti face the crisis.
The special cabinet committee on the economy is headed by both Azmin and Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Last week, Miti was criticised after announcing that barbershops were among the additional sectors allowed to operate during the third phase of the MCO.
Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah had also disagreed with barbershops operating during this period.
Meanwhile, Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki also questioned the move to allow the construction sector to operate, saying most workers were migrants.
Azmin did not address this at the press conference today.
However, he said construction companies must adhere to strict guidelines including reducing its workforce to the bare minimum not exceeding 50 percent of what is needed.
Companies must also cooperate with the Health Ministry in executing contact tracing in the event of a Covid-19 infection.
Azmin said today that all companies allowed to operate during the MCO must get their workers screened for Covid-19 at Socso panel health clinics nationwide. - Mkini
