CORONAVIRUS | The International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) website has crashed this morning after opening applications for movement control order (MCO) exemptions for certain non-essential services.
In view of this, it said the application system would be shut down from 2pm to 4pm today for "reconfiguration".
In a statement today, Miti said there were more than 176,000 visitors to its website between 9am and 11am when the applications were open.
"Miti has concluded that the majority of visitors are not (from) companies but by individuals.
"The number of visitors was too high and does not correlate with the number of businesses in the sectors approved (for exemptions)," said Miti.
The "reconfiguration" of its website will ensure only businesses are allowed to access the application system.
Miti also urged legitimate business owners to "save" their company information on the website before 2pm.
As of 1.30pm, the website could not be accessed.
This is not the first time the Miti website has crashed.
On March 19, the website crashed after a flood of applications by essential service providers.
Business guilds were later roped in to help clear the backlog manually.
On April 10, Miti announced additional sectors that will be exempted from some MCO restrictions. This included law firms, firms in the automotive sector and even hairdressers.
Exemptions are not automatic and any firm which wishes to be exempted must submit an application through the Miti website. There are no other application methods.
Many irate applicants have complained to Miti on Twitter. Some report that the system crashed as early as 9am.
