Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin said Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will help strengthen Perikatan Nasional if he heeds Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's call to appoint several Sabah Umno leaders to federal positions.
He said this in response to a letter penned by Zahid, dated April 16, lobbying for Muhyiddin to appoint several Sabah leaders, including Bung (photo, above), to federal positions.
Specifically, Zahid asked Bung, who is facing a corruption trial, to be appointed as the Sabah Federal Development Department chairperson.
Bung, speaking to Malaysiakini, said he only learnt of the letter and is supportive of Zahid's request.
"It is surely for the people of Sabah, and it will also help strengthen PN in Sabah ahead of the general election," he said.
Zahid, in his letter sighted by Malaysiakini, had also proposed Umno's newly-elected Kimanis MP Mohamad Alamin to be made a deputy minister representing Sabah Umno.
Zahid, who is also Bagan Datuk MP, also requested for Tuaran division chief Abdul Rahman Dahlan to be appointed as a member of the Dewan Negara, and for the Sabah Umno deputy chairperson Yakubah Khan to be appointed as Labuan Port Authority (LPA) chairperson.
The position is vacant after Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Fong Hin was removed from LPA effective April 1.
Rahman Dahlan was a minister in the Prime Minister's Department during the BN government era under the helm of Najib Abdul Razak.
In the letter, Zahid said he relayed the suggestions from Sabah Umno after discussing with the state party leadership. - Mkini
