Those mistaken for homeless can only leave shelters after MCO

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | Those mistakenly taken to temporary transit centres for the homeless can only leave the premises after the movement control order (MCO) is lifted.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said this is because the Covid-19 virus is still spreading.
“Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is looking into the matter. If it is true (there are those with homes in the shelter), we will ask their families to pick them up after the MCO.
“Yes, (because) the virus is still spreading,” he replied when asked if these individuals would be required to remain at the centres until then.
Since last week, DBKL has housed more than 500 homeless people in community centres and multipurpose halls to keep them safe from the Covid-19 outbreak.
These temporary shelters are located in Sentul Perdana, Setiawangsa, Alam Damai Cheras and Tasik Ampang Hilir.
However, Malaysiakini was informed that some of those at the Sentul Perdana and Alam Damai centres were mistaken for being homeless when queuing for free meals.
In once incident, police purportedly took an Indonesian tour guide who was supposed to move into a new house after spotting her with luggage.
Among those in the shelters were migrant workers looking for free meals after struggling to make ends meet during the MCO.
The MCO was implemented on March 18 with the aim of flattening the infection curve. It was scheduled to end on March 31 but was extended to April 14.
On April 10, the Health Ministry would furnish the government with the relevant data to determine if another extension is required.
Meanwhile, the entire Kuala Lumpur has been designated a Covid-19 red zone after recording more than 40 positive cases.
Whereas, three buildings in the capital – Selangor Mansion, Malaysian Mansion and Menara City One – have been placed under a total lockdown or an enhanced MCO. - Mkini
