Academy of Medicine urges gov't to review Raya visits policy

Malaysiakini

Hari Raya visits involving up to 20 people could only undo all efforts to contain the Covid-19 outbreak in the country, says the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia (AMM).
Expressing disappointment with the leeway, AMM requested the government to review the policy, taking into consideration the immense difficulties and massive resources needed to do contact tracing.
"It has been proven that it only takes one infected person, especially those who are asymptomatic or carry false-negative test results, to spread the disease unknowingly to family members.
"We propose that face-to-face Hari Raya celebrations should only be with family members residing in the same house," AMM said in a statement today.
It also reminded Putrajaya that excessive relaxation of the conditional movement control order (MCO) would potentially reverse hard-won victories achieved through the sacrifices of the people and frontliners.
Yesterday, Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that the figure as announced by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is relative.
"The figure is relative based on the number of members in a family. If it includes children and grandchildren, maybe the number of the family is 20.
"What is important is to observe the guideline which is social distancing," he said.
The conditional MCO has been extended until June 9.
While Hari Raya visits in the same state are allowed, the public is disallowed to travel interstate.
The government is also expected to announce the standard operating procedure for congregational prayers. - Mkini
