Asyraf: Umno won't leave, but how long will Bersatu last in PN?

Malaysiakini

Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki today maintained that his party won't leave the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government, although he said the coalition was not on par with BN or its alliance with PAS under Muafakat Nasional.
Asyraf (photo) said the formalisation of PN will need to undergo the same process as in BN and Mufakat Nasional, but questioned if this can be done in light of the infighting in Bersatu.
"A decision to register formally register PN needs to consider the internal crisis in Bersatu which raises questions how long will Bersatu last in PN, particularly when its chairperson (Mahathir Mohamad) and youth wing declared that they rejected cooperation with Umno and wants to return to Harapan.
"The Bersatu president (Muhyiddin Yassin) is also being challenged by the Bersatu chairperson's son (Mukhriz Mahathir) in the upcoming party election," he said in a statement.
Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that the Umno supreme council, after a heated meeting, decided not to formalise the PN coalition at this point of time.
Asyraf said "PN" is only a name assigned to the cooperation aimed at forming the new government under Muhyiddin after the collapsed of the Harapan government.
He added Umno supported Muhyiddin as prime minister to "save the country" from Harapan's political crisis, PKR's "greed" and DAP's "chauvinism".
Asyraf said it was also not easy to formalise the PN coalition considering Bersatu's history.
"The suggestion to formally form PN needs to go through the same process (as BN and Muafakat Nasional) as it is not easy for the political parties, particular Umno and Bersatu, to form a coalition like BN or Muafakat Nasional.
"This is because many Bersatu MPs had won in the 14th general election on an Umno-BN ticket before they defected," he said.
Asyraf said at present, PN remains a collection of MPs representing their respective parties in supporting Muhyiddin's government.
"PN is not the same with BN or Muafakat Nasional. BN is a registered political party comprising Umno, MCA, MIC and PBRS.
"PN is also not the same as Mufakat Nasional. Even though Muafakat Nasional is not a registered entity, there is official consensus binding Umno and PAS through a charter," he said.
He stressed Umno will defend the PN government until the 15th general election but did not state how the dynamics will change when they go to the polls.
Bersatu is presently split between Muhyiddin's faction and Mahathir's faction.
The Harapan government collapsed in late February after Muhyiddin took Bersatu out of the coalition and joined forces with a group of PKR defectors led by former PKR deputy president Azmin Ali.
Together with the BN, PAS, GPS and other minor parties, they formed the new PN federal government.
Mahathir had indicated he plans to wrest back control of the party in the next Bersatu election and withdraw the party from the PN government. - Mkini
