Baby Ivan back in Russia six weeks after birth in abandoned house

Malaysiakini

The saga of Baby Ivan Pervin who was born in an abandoned house in Kuala Lumpur after his parents were stranded here during the movement control order (MCO) has come to a happy ending.
Ivan and his parents, Russian couple Yevgeny and Natalia Pervin (below), were among 200 Russians who were flown back in a chartered jet that left the federal capital last night.
His father Yevgeny contacted Malaysiakini via WhatsApp from Russia saying that they had arrived safely.
"Even after Moscow, we have another two-hour flight to our home in Arkhangelsk and then 14 days of quarantine there," said Yevgeny, who said he is looking forward to seeing his first son Vladimir there.
Ironically, Russia is experiencing a severe Covid-19 outbreak of its own and the number of cases has soared to 326,448, the third-highest in the world. There have been 3,249 fatalities thus far.
The couple had never expected that their dream of touring South East Asia would lead to them being stranded in Kuala Lumpur and their second child Ivan being born in an abandoned property in the heart of the bustling, equatorial city.
They began their travels on Oct 4, 2019, and had planned to return to Arkhangelsk on March 22 after visiting Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, China and Malaysia.
However, they were trapped here when the MCO was imposed on March 18 and when they ran out of funds, ended up moving into an abandoned property in Jalan Mesra where Ivan was born on April 13.
Yevgeny developed a tense relationship with the Russian Embassy but said he would forever be grateful to the kind Malaysians who provided food, water and even rigged up a cable so that they had electricity.
"People were so kind to us. We at first illegally broke into a house but we met a friend of the owner and they allowed us to stay for a while.
"Malaysian police even gave us some diapers and I was also given a part-time job loading vegetables for delivery. This helped us survive," he added.
He said that a small community of Russians stranded in Malaysia then started to stay in the abandoned house and all (except for one) managed to get a place on yesterday's flight.
Malaysiakini has yet to get an official response from the Russian Embassy on further details of the flight. - Mkini
