PETALING JAYA: Indonesia's badminton legend Taufik Hidayat (pic) has hit the news again, this time it's for the wrong reason.
According to a news report by Antara news agency, Taufik has admitted to acting as an intermediary in an alleged bribery case implicating former Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi, who served from 2014 to 2019.
The 2005 world champion and 2004 Olympic champion said this during a court hearing last Wednesday in Jakarta.
In his testimony, Taufik – a six-time Indonesian Open champion – also admitted to delivering Rp1bil (RM290,000) to the minister's personal assistant, Miftahul Ulum, in January 2018.
"I was asked to help via a phone call. I agreed, but I did not tell Pak Imam that I had already given the money to Ulum," said Taufik in his testimony.
The Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has indicted Imam of receiving bribes worth Rp11.5bil (RM3mil) and other gifts worth Rp8.6bil (RM2.5mil) from numerous ministries and Indonesia Sports Council (KONI) officials. - Star
