Division chiefs dispute Selangor Bersatu’s backing for Muhyiddin

Malaysiakini
Several Bersatu division chiefs in Selangor have disputed a statement by the state leadership that backed party president Muhyiddin Yassin as acting chairperson.
They claimed that what was announced in the statement yesterday differed from the collective decision which was supposedly reached during a Selangor Bersatu meeting on May 13.
“What was actually agreed collectively was to respect and support Muhyiddin as prime minister and Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Bersatu chairperson.
“We did not agree to any determination regarding the acting chair let alone the proposal, discussion or agreement to dismiss anyone in accordance with Article 10.2 of the Bersatu constitution.
“We stress that we don’t want any effort to sack Mahathir nor (Bersatu deputy president) Mukhriz Mahathir.
“With that, we do not agree with the Selangor Bersatu press release,” the group said in a joint statement.
The statement was undersigned by Bersatu’s Kuala Selangor chief Mohd Shaid Rosli, Klang chief Syed Abdillah Syed Abd Aziz and Bangi chief Mohd Sufian Mat Junus.
For the record, there are 22 Bersatu divisions in Selangor.
Yesterday, Selangor Bersatu chief Abdul Rashid Asari claimed that his state chapter has endorsed Muhyiddin to take over as Bersatu chairperson.

He thanked Mahathir for his services but said he had already resigned as Bersatu chairperson.
He also said Mukhriz’s backing for Pakatan Harapan warranted action under Article 10.2 of the party's constitution referring to the provision that allowed for a person's Bersatu membership to be immediately terminated if they engaged in a number of activities detrimental to the party.
Mahathir had indeed resigned as both prime minister and Bersatu chairperson on Feb 24 after his party defied him and exited Pakatan Harapan to form a new government dubbed "Perikatan Nasional" together with several PKR defectors, BN, PAS, GPS, PBS and Star.
Shortly after his resignation, however, Bersatu convinced him to stay on and announced that Mahathir would remain as chairperson.
They then failed to convince Mahathir to go along with the PN plan and Muhyiddin's faction subsequently disregarded that they had asked him to stay on and had rejected his resignation.
As Mahathir mounts a campaign against Muhyiddin, Bersatu is now arguing that the party did not have the power to reject Mahathir's resignation and therefore his resignation stood.
With that, they maintain that Muhyiddin is now the party's acting chairperson. - Mkini
