Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the party wants to sack its president Muhyiddin Yassin but would do so through the right channel.
Speaking at a press conference at the Bersatu headquarters in Petaling Jaya this evening, he said such a decision would only be made by the supreme council through a proper meeting.
"Yes, we will have to sack him. But we have to have proper sitting of the supreme council," he added.
Mahathir was answering a question on whether he considered Muhyiddin as having betrayed the party by taking it out of Pakatan Harapan without the approval of the supreme council.
The question comes after Mahathir was "sacked" by Bersatu executive secretary Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya for sitting with the opposition in Parliament on May 18.
Suhaimi, who is understood be in the Bersatu camp which is aligned to Muhyiddin, cited that Mahathir and four other Bersatu MPs who sat in the opposition bloc had purportedly violated the party constitution and thus had their memberships automatically nullified.
However, Mahathir and the other Bersatu MPs have since rejected Suhaimi's decision saying that the latter had no power to do so.
In return, Mahathir today said that he has instead decided to sack Suhaimi from the position as Bersatu executive secretary for exceeding his powers.
"So, now Suhaimi is no longer the executive secretary. So he no longer has the right to write any letter on behalf of the party or even use the Bersatu letterhead," said Mahathir.
The former prime minister said he has now appointed another party member, Shazmi Miah, as the new executive secretary to replace Suhaimi. - Mkini
