Health frontliners to get time off, counselling for burnout: DG

Malaysiakini

Government healthcare workers at the frontline of the battle against Covid-19 will be given rest in stages now that the number of cases has gone down.
According to Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the Health Ministry would also provide counselling to the frontliners to prepare them in the event cases start to rise again.
"Health Ministry frontliners have been working day and night for five months, that they can barely differentiate whether it is a weekend or weekday.
"But today, we can see that all the sacrifices have worked out, new cases have declined, and the hospital wards including the intensive care units have a low number of patients.
"We may use this opportunity to give some time off to the Health Ministry workforce in stages. We will also give them counselling to prepare them for an increase in cases, if it happens," he told reporters in Putrajaya today.
Noor Hisham (below) was answering a question on the ministry's approach to ensure the mental health of its frontliners, who might experience burnout after working long hours and without any leave since early this year.
He said the ministry also plans to re-strategise its Covid-19 approach in the next couple of weeks.
During the press conference, Noor Hisham also expressed his appreciation to all the frontliners for their efforts.
"This is the challenge for all of us, the frontliners and all the Health Ministry workforce. But what is sure is that we are the last line of defence to prevent a catastrophe from happening to our country.
"I would like to take this opportunity to also express my appreciation to all other frontliners, including the police, armed forces, NGOs and everyone who had been working hard to achieve what we have today," he said. - Mkini
