CORONAVIRUS | The Health Ministry is conducting swab tests on close to 3,000 undocumented migrants at Bukit Jalil and Semenyih depots following reports of Covid-19 cases there.
Senior Minister (security cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob (above) shared this in his daily media conference today, adding that two Covid-19 cases were detected at the Semenyih depot.
"The Health Ministry is conducting swab tests on all 1,200 undocumented migrants at the Bukit Jalil depot.
"A total of 114 Immigration officers and personnel have also undergone swab tests and tested negative for Covid-19.
"While at the depot in Semenyih, swab tests are being conducted on 1,600 undocumented migrants, as we were informed of two positive cases detected there," he said.
Yesterday, Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said patients from the Bukit Jalil cluster had been housed at the depot since before the start of the movement control order (MCO) on March 18.
Ismail said that the patients, including 60 from the Bukit Jalil depot, have been sent to a quarantine centre at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (Maeps).
He assured the public that they did not need to worry about the Covid-19 outbreak in the depots as it has not spread outside of it.
"No need to worry because in the depot, it's as if they are already in a quarantine centre. If there's a positive case, it stays there.
"We need to be worried if they (the migrants) are outside because they could spread the virus to other people," he said.
On the standard operating procedure for the Immigration staff at a depot, Ismail said that if there's a reported case, they have to wear Personal Protective Equipment. - Mkini
