Health Ministry worried, warns of cross-state Covid-19 infections

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | The Health Ministry has expressed concern at the trend of people trying to travel across state lines even though it is still not allowed under the conditional movement control order (MCO).
"The Health Ministry is worried when observing the movement of individuals across states, particularly with the upcoming festive season," Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah told a press conference in Putrajaya.
He noted police's report that they turned back 508 vehicles yesterday and 1,248 vehicles today attempting to cross state lines.
Noor Hisham said based on his ministry's records, 971 people who became infected with Covid-19 had a history of travelling cross-state.
"Furthermore, 18 out of the 49 clusters recorded in Malaysia were related to travelling across state lines.
"Ten of these clusters are still active," he said.
Noor Hisham (photo) said Covid-19 cases involving cross-state travel is "very worrying" and will continue to be a concern even after the conditional MCO ends.
"The people must exercise caution during the coming festive season as it could become a catalyst for the spread of Covid-19 in areas that are currently green zones.
According to the Health Ministry's definition, green zones are areas free of active Covid-19 cases while yellow zones have up to 40 cases and red zones have more than 40 cases.
Noor Hisham reiterated that the fight against Covid-19 requires every citizen to take responsibility.
He urged people to comply with the conditional MCO and practice good hygiene and social distancing.
Noor Hisham added that high-risk groups such as children and elderly should be protected and people should also avoid crowded and confined spaces as well as close conversations. - Mkini
