Heavy rain causes floods in Teluk Kumbar villages

GEORGE TOWN: About 100 homes in several villages in Teluk Kumbar were hit by flash floods following a continuous downpour that began right after the breaking of fast on Sunday (May 10).
Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz said among the worst hit areas in Teluk Kumbar were Kampung Suluk, Kampung Nelayan, Kampung Paya and the cluster house residence.

"The flash flood was due to the very heavy downpour and also due to a smaller degree to the pumphouse project that was under construction in the nearby area," he said on Monday (May 11).
Azrul said right after the breaking fast, heavy rain lashed the area.
He said he rushed to the scene after receiving calls from villagers saying that their villages were being inundated.
He said the villages were submerged in waters at up to thigh-level.
"The flood subsided by midnight after the rain stopped at about 10.30pm," he said.
He added that no villagers were evacuated.
Meanwhile in Baling, 48 people from 10 families had to be evacuated following heavy rain lasting more than two hours on Sunday.
Baling Civil Defence Force officer Lieutenant (PA) Mohd Faizol Abdul Aziz said the victims, including a baby, were evacuated to Dewan Tun Lama at around 10pm.
"Among the worst hit area were Kampung Kaki Bukit, Batu Tujuh, Teluk Sanau, Bukit Palong, Dusun Ghani, Bendang Sera, Mukim Siong, Kampung Tandop Keling Siput, Kampung Siput, Kampung and Cenerai Kota," he said in a statement Sunday.
The heavy rain also caused flash floods at Kampung Paya Lantau in Bukit Kayu Hitam, with floodwaters submerging several homes in the village. - Star
