I’m still alive, says RTM newscaster after namesake’s death

Radio Televisyen Malaysia newsreader Harjit Singh Hullon.
PETALING JAYA: Veteran Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) newsreader Harjit Singh Hullon today assured that he is alive and well after a case of mistaken identity sparked a stream of condolence messages from well-meaning people who believed he had passed away.
He said he had been mistaken for Harjit Singh Bhullar, who was also his colleague in RTM during the 60s.
Bhullar, a former Radio Malaysia English Service sports commentator, died in Perth, Australia, yesterday. He was in his 80s.
Harjit, 67, said condolence messages had been pouring in since then, including one with a picture of him.
“I’d like to assure that I’m hale and hearty,” he told FMT.

Harjit was a well-known Berita Dunia Jam 10 anchor. He began his career as a newsreader in 1971, reading English news in the day and Bahasa Malaysia news on television.
He said Bhullar had migrated to Perth in the 90s with his wife Doris Chua, another Radio Malaysia colleague with whom he had two sons and a daughter.
“After a stint in radio, Bhullar ventured into television where he became a producer in the 1970s. My condolences to his wife and children for their loss,” he added. - FMT
