Ismail Sabri: 64 compounded for visits on fourth day of Raya

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | Despite the restriction on interstate travel, open houses and house visits during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations, police continue to detect many such infractions, Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.
He said police yesterday had to order 842 vehicles to turn around after attempting to return to their hometown across state lines without authorisation. Up to 824 vehicles were made to do the same the previous day.
Of these, Selangor yesterday once more recorded the highest number of attempts at interstate travel with 514 vehicles, followed by Negeri Sembilan (54), and Malacca (51).
Police, Ismail added, also issued 64 compounds for violations pertaining to Aidilfitri visits. This out of 473 compounds issued yesterday at police stations for various violations of the conditional movement control order (MCO).
A total of 728 compounds were issued yesterday by police enforcing the control order.
“As we know, Aidilfitri visits were only permitted on the first day of Hari Raya, so anything beyond the first day, such as the second, third or fourth day, is still not permitted. So if you do this, police will issue a compound,” he said during his daily press briefing in Putrajaya today.
As part of Covid-19 prevention measures, the government only permits visiting on the first day of Aidilfitri, Hari Kaamatan and Hari Gawai, the latter two festivals falling on May 30 and June 1 respectively.
In addition, visiting is limited to family, with a cap of 20 people a day, depending on the size of the premises. Interstate travel, meanwhile, is not permitted.
Meanwhile, Ismail (below) added that police also arrested and remanded 187 individuals, also for breaching the MCO.
The senior minister in charge of security cluster also said the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have opened 266 investigation papers into purported fake news related to Covid-19.
Of that number, 179 of them are still under investigation while 30 have been charged in court. Another 11 have been given warning notices while 18 others have pleaded guilty.
The fast response team from MCMC has issued 301 denials and clarifications related to Covid-19 fake news, Ismail said.
He urged the public to be careful of fake news before spreading any content which has not been verified.
On a separate matter, Ismail said the public should listen and obey the Malaysian Volunteer Corps Department (Rela), and other organisations which are helping the police in monitoring the situation under the conditional MCO.
This is because they are only doing it for the welfare and safety of the people, he added.
“It is true that Rela and even the military do not have the power to arrest, but… they are only helping the police to carry out their duties, in terms of monitoring and so on.
“If anyone disobeys Rela, they can inform the police so the police can take action,” Ismail said.
He also gave the examples of community leaders, who have been called to become frontliners to ensure their community’s compliance under the conditional MCO, saying they are also doing it for the good of their community.
“So think of what they are doing as for your own good. So if you can, not just to the police, but to all who are taking care of us, the rakyat should listen and obey them all,” Ismail said. - Mkini
