Kampung Tunku assemblyperson Lim Yi Wei has lodged a police report against a man who allegedly sexually harassed her.
The report was filed at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters this morning.
The report read that on May 22, Bandar Utama assemblyperson Jamaliah Jamaluddin informed Lim of a comment on Jamaliah's Facebook page which contained sexual harassment against Lim and Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah.
Police arrested the suspect on May 20 after Jamaliah lodged a report on the matter.
The 40-year old man was said to have used the identity of MCA youth chief Nicole Wong to commit the crime.
The suspect also allegedly made death threats and racist remarks against the politicians.
District police chief Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said the suspect is an OKU cardholder since 2015 and had undergone psychiatric treatment in the past.
In a statement to the media later, Lim highlighted the issues of online sexual harassment and cyber-bullying.
"During the Movement Control Order (MCO), 18.5 percent of All-Women's Action Society’s helpline cases were sexual harassment cases, of which 41.7 percent happened online," she said.
Lim said the cases included sexual harassment by Covid-19 quarantine staff, an employee receiving a picture of animal sex from her boss, and another woman whose pictures were leaked to a Whatsapp group.
She noted the Pakatan Harapan government before it was deposed, was about to table a sexual harassment bill during a parliament sitting in March.
"I call on Malaysians who desire a safer online space for us and our children to ensure the current Perikatan Nasional government tables this bill without delay at the July parliament sitting," she said. - Mkini
