Mah rubbishes Kit Siang's claim 'Sheraton Move' contributed to Covid-19 outbreak

Malaysiakini

Dr Mah Hang Son has rejected a claim by DAP's Lim Kit Siang that the Sheraton Move which led to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government was also responsible for the second wave of Covid-19 outbreak in Malaysia.
Instead, Mah (photo), who is MCA deputy president but says he was commenting in his personal capacity, has pointed the finger at Harapan's reaction to the Covid-19 outbreak, citing statements by coalition's then Health minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and Culture, Arts and Tourism minister Mohammadin Ketapi.
"I can't imagine what would happen if we were still under the Harapan government," said Mah, who is a qualified cardiologist, in a Facebook post last night.
"After reading Lim's post thoroughly, I could not find any factor in the Perikatan Nasional government causing Malaysia to face this second wave of Covid-19.
"Lim (below) touched on a number of political issues that were not directly related to Covid-19 such as a minister who mentioned the number of participants in an E-conference to several countries," said Mah in reference to a verbal error by Health Minister Dr Adham Baba.
"Dzulkefly Ahmad advocated the government to implement intense social distancing measures to combat the spread of Covid-19, instead of a lockdown," added Mah.
"He said this on March 16 before the movement control order (MCO) was implemented.
"What would happen to our country if we had followed this former minister's suggestion?"
Mah then went further back to cite Mohammadin Ketapi. In late January, when the outbreak was going beyond China's borders, he was still advocating that tourist entries not be blocked.
Lim yesterday wrote that if not for the Sheraton Move and the ensuing political turmoil, Malaysia would not have suffered the second wave of Covid-19 outbreak and would be spared the MCO and conditional MCO with their devastating effect on lives and livelihoods.
The stalwart added that it was fortunate that Malaysia did not have to depend on the political leadership from the PN government to combat the second wave of the invisible war against Covid-19.
Lim said PN was more concerned with consolidating its position, including how to nullify Parliament of its constitutional roles of oversight and scrutiny of government actions.
Mah said he had viewed some videos uploaded by some foreigners about how successful Malaysia was against the pandemic.
He also raised the willingness of the Health Ministry and the government to convert the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) Hall to a quarantine hospital in just four days, citing it as another example of quick government response. - Mkini
