Mahathir appeals membership nullification with ROS, Bersatu

Malaysiakini

Dr Mahathir Mohamad is appealing the nullification of his Bersatu membership with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) and the party.
In a statement today, his lawyer Haniff Khatri (above) said appeal letters have been sent.
“We submitted a stern appeal notice to the ROS on behalf of our client today against the ‘nullification’ of his membership as a Bersatu member, which was done in a letter from the party dated May 28.
“We also requested that the ROS refer to Section 16(1) of the Societies Act 1966,” he said.
That section states in the event of a dispute between a member or office-bearer with a society, the ROS can issue a notice to the society requiring it to provide evidence that the dispute has been settled.
The evidence has to be provided within one month of the ROS’ request.
According to the Act, should the society fail to comply with the notice, the ROS “may take steps to cancel the registration of the society”.
Haniff said that a second “stern appeal notice” has been submitted to the Bersatu headquarters over the nullification of Mahathir’s party membership.
“Mahathir stresses that his (Bersatu) membership and status as Bersatu chairperson stands and is valid,” he added.
Bersatu organising secretary Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya served Mahathir a letter yesterday stating that his membership had been nullified.
The decision was made based on constitutional provisions that one’s membership will be terminated immediately if one was found to have joined another party or declared their intention to leave the party.
Aside from Mahathir, four others were served similar notices - Bersatu deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir, youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, and supreme council members Maszlee Malik and Amiruddin Hamzah.
The five are at odds with party president and prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.  - Mkini
