Since the minting of a sudden, new government out of the blues in February 2020, Malaysia has added yet another woe-be-thine to its struggles.
The arrival of Covid-19 and its victims are just far too many for any government and especially for one that parachuted into Parliament.
Today, the new government under the stewardship of prime minister Muhyiddin that was endorsed by the Council of Rulers is plagued by both the baggage of past sins of bad governance plus a threatening Covid-19 economic deluge.
As the global economy increasingly threatens to teeter off the cliff of progress and development, it is a double wobble for the bandwagon of politicians jumping onto the railroad of new-found power and control of the gravy train that promises to flow from the powerhouse of Putrajaya and state governments.
Meanwhile, the push and pull of geopolitical uncertainties between the three superpowers - US, China and Russia - cannot be a rainbow for the coalition of the already desperate Perikatan Nasional government.
How could it be otherwise, pray tell us?
While the lockdown in these times of a ravaging and insurmountable Covid-19 pandemic may seem to have stomped out public protests, the truth is social unhappiness will only root even deeper in desperate situations.
With the oil and gas industry plus tourism and its related spin-offs deemed to be in tinders, the financial ails of the nation will boomerang on the unelected government of the day.
Indeed much to the chagrin of the plotters who saw the chance to raid and oust a democratically-elected government, they may have underestimated the casual effects of Covid-19.
It is a sad setback for Malaysia. The clouds are darkening on the horizon. Any amount of oppressing laws will not liberate a bandwagon of politicians who still believe that the public are fools who can be bought over with crumbs, cream and icing.
Covid-19 is here to stay for longer but they think otherwise. We have not seen the second or third waves yet. Mutation of the virus is not an "impossible probability" as we see breaking news about it the world over.
The 'new normal' will have huge ramifications on societal behaviour and create great duress on an increasingly unhappy population that thought it had broken the yoke of power abuses after six decades of lost hope.
As society buckles under the pressures of economic disasters and financial nightmares coupled with lost and wrecked hopes, it is only a matter of time before those in an overnight power position begin to dread even the daylight.
Naysayers, please read world history to acknowledge bitter truths. Let this debacle be a history lesson for the new opposition and future leaders too. - Mkini
