Najib appointed as economic advisor? Fake news, says PMO

Malaysiakini

The Prime Minister's Office has dismissed reports in several blogs on the appointment of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak as the economic advisor to the government, calling it fake news.
The article lobbying Najib for the post was highlighted on May 22.
"PMO denies the authenticity of the article entitled 'Najib as the economic advisor, not finance minister or PM' which went viral on social media.
"PMO clarifies that it never issued any statement as stated in the article," Communications and Multimedia Ministry's response team said in a statement yesterday.
The article stated that certain parties had requested and urged the new government to rope in Najib to revive the country's economy hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, given his previous experience.
Citing Pakatan Harapan government which during its 22-month rule had appointed veterans as the advisors, the article proposed Muhyiddin Yassin's government to emulate the concept by taking Najib as the economic advisor to the government.
The article quoted unnamed netizens as urging not to change the prime minister and finance minister as these posts were at the right hands, thus not suitable for Najib.
Najib, who served as prime minister from 2009 to 2018 and finance minister from 2008 to 2018, is currently facing multiple charges in relation to the alleged misappropriation of 1MDB funds.
BN suffered a defeat in the 2018 general election partly due to the 1MDB scandal. - Mkini
