An online petition urging DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang to quit politics was done to divert the public's attention from his call for the government to hold a full Dewan Rakyat sitting instead of a one-day sitting on May 18.
In a statement today, DAP organisation bureau secretary Vincent Wu urged those behind the petition to “stop wasting their energy” on such a “trivial matter”.
"This group which harboured a specific agenda was trying to confuse the people, to cover up the ridiculous decision of having a one-day sitting in the Dewan Rakyat for political interests," he said.
"I urge them to stop diverting the attention of the public and to just focus on monitoring Perikatan Nasional's possible wrong decisions in combatting the Covid-19 pandemic," he said.
He added that the PN government will miss the opportunity to allow the opposition to monitor its governance effectively by not allowing a full Dewan Rakyat sitting.
Wu was responding to an online petition that urged Lim to keep his promise and resign from politics.
This comes in the wake of the Iskandar Puteri MP calling on Malaysians to ink another petition demanding the government to hold a two-week Parliament sitting.
The petition against Lim referred to news articles in May last year, which quoted the DAP leader as stating he would throw in the towel if the then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad did not pass the baton to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
Wu, however, said that Lim is unable to keep his words as Pakatan Harapan was ousted by PN.
"With PN grabbing power via such undemocratic means, of course there was no way for Mahathir to hand over his power to Anwar, thus it is equally impossible for Lim as an opposition member to fulfil his promises too," said Wu.
"The political instability (two months ago) had caused (us) to squander a golden opportunity to contain Covid-19 while the movement control order (MCO) has only exposed the government’s flaws and lack of coordination.” - Mkini
