Penang PKR Youth has urged Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow to take legal action against the two Bersatu assemblypersons who have rescinded their support for the state government.
The two are Bertam representative Khalid Mehtab Mohd Ishaq and Teluk Bahang representative Zolkifli Md Lazim.
In a statement today, Penang PKR Youth chief Fahmi Zainol reminded Chow (photo, above) to abide by his promise to make defectors vacate their seats.
“In early March, Chow made a statement that stern action will be taken against any state assemblypersons who support traitors, in accordance with the Penang Constitutional Enactment (Amendment) 2012.
“We at Penang PKR Youth want to remind the CM to fulfil his promise that representatives who betray and turn their backs on the rakyat’s mandate will need to vacate their seats and pave the way for a by-election,” he said.
The Penang Constitutional Enactment (Amendment) 2012 refers to the state’s anti-hopping law.
The law states that elected representatives have to vacate their seat if they switch parties or become independent assemblypersons during their tenure.
Malaysiakini has contacted Chow and Penang State Assembly Speaker Law Choo Kiang for comment for this story.
Meanwhile, Khalid told Malaysiakini that he was prepared to face the music.
“Well, if the state government wants to take any action, I can’t stop them from doing that,” he said when contacted.
Zolkifli had yet to respond to requests for comment at publication time.
Back in March, the duo had pledged allegiance to the Harapan state government despite the party’s decision to quit the coalition.
Today, they told Malaysiakini that they had decided to toe the party line and become Opposition representatives in the state.
This comes after both were appointed to agencies under the Rural Development Ministry. - Mkini
