Saifuddin orders MCMC not to act against HK media over migrant report

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said he has instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) not to act against Hong Kong-based media South China Morning Post (SCMP).
This is over its report titled: "Coronavirus: Hundreds arrested as Malaysia cracks down on migrants in Covid-19 red zones" which had upset the government.
Saifuddin informed of the decision to one of the article's author Tashny Sukumaran, who took to Twitter to reveal that she had been summoned by police over the report.
"I have stated to TV3 this morning that I have directed MCMC to not act against you.
"I may not like your piece, but I will defend your right to write it.
"Yesterday, (Health Ministry director-general) Noor Hisham Abdullah has clarified the issues you raise. This is the way to do it i.e. clarify and explain," he said.
It is unclear if cops will also drop its investigation as the police fall under the jurisdiction of the Home Ministry, which is helmed by Hamzah Zainuddin.
Yesterday, the government defended the raid and arrest of undocumented migrants in Covid-19 red zones.
Defence Minister Ismail Sabri had assured all of them were tested for Covid-19 and were not mistreated.
Human rights group have warned that the move will create a culture of fear and deter undocumented migrants from coming forward to get tested for Covid-19. - Mkini
