Selangor Bersatu rep claims members against attempt to sack Dr M, Mukhriz

Malaysiakini

A Bersatu state assemblyperson has claimed that grassroots members in Selangor are against any attempt to sack Dr Mahathir Mohamad, his son and Bersatu deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir as well as others not aligned with Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
Kuang assemblyperson Sallehudin Amiruddin (above in ochre shirt), who claimed to represent grassroots members in Selangor, pointed out that the rakyat had given their mandate to Pakatan Harapan in 2018 at the time led by Mahathir.
"Going against this mandate is an act of treachery towards the democratic principle held since independence," he said in a statement today.
Sallehudin further disputed Selangor Bersatu state chief Abdul Rashid Ashari's endorsement by the state chapter for Muhyiddin to takeover the chairperson's post from Mahathir.
Referring to Rashid's statement on Tuesday, Sallehudin denied that grassroots Bersatu members in Selangor have backed Muhyiddin to take up the acting chairperson's post after a dispute over Mahathir's resignation.
"The Selangor Bersatu grassroots also stand firm and fully support Mahathir's leadership as Bersatu chairperson," he said.
Several Bersatu division chiefs in Selangor on Wednesday also disputed Rashid's statement, claiming that what was announced differed from a collective decision which was supposedly reached during a Selangor Bersatu meeting on May 13.
Mahathir had resigned as both prime minister and Bersatu chairperson on Feb 24 after his party defied him and exited Pakatan Harapan to form a new government dubbed "Perikatan Nasional" together with several PKR defectors, BN, PAS, GPS, PBS and Star.
Shortly after his resignation, however, Bersatu convinced him to stay on and announced that Mahathir would remain as chairperson.
Recent developments within Bersatu, however, saw a majority of its supreme council members now backing a campaign to sack Mahathir, Mukhriz and several others not aligned to Muhyiddin. - Mkini
