Six flash floods in a year – residents spend Raya mopping up

Malaysiakini

Over 100 residents at Taman Wadi Iman, Kok Lanas, Kelantan have been plagued with flash floods since they moved into their houses over a year ago.
Over the period, they claimed to have suffered multiple flash floods due to a flawed drainage system.
The affordable housing area was developed by Kelantan Menteri Besar Incorporated (PMBK) and was completed and officiated on April 29, 2018.
Yet the problem persisted despite numerous complaints being made to the relevant authorities.
One resident, Kamaruddin Mohamad, 45, said he has lived in a house in the area for only a year and has already gone through six flash floods.
Each time there is heavy rain, he said the surrounding areas would become inundated with water and this would spill into his house.
“I rented the place since a year ago and this is the sixth incident. Today it rained for about an hour, and the water level rose quickly until it reached the house.
“While other people were celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri, we have to clean up our houses. This time it’s quite bad but not as bad as the last rainy season. Our furniture was all damaged then,” he said when met at his house today.
Norasyikin Haron, 52, too, lives in a house bought from PMKB a year ago. She said each time there was heavy rain, her family would move their furniture to safety.
“The flash floods here usually happen quickly and can even reach the house in less than an hour. When there is rain, the drains will overflow and swamp the housing area. We can see that the water cannot flow elsewhere.
“This time, residents have resorted to breaking the retaining walls of a nearby drain so the floodwaters can keep flowing away,” she said.
Another resident Yusahiran Mat Jusoh, 31, said it was regrettable that the developer and local authorities have taken no action to resolve the problem.
He said the developer should have taken prompt action in identifying the source of the recurring problem.
“Our hope is that relevant authorities will resolve this problem immediately. We, the residents here are tired of having to face this situation.
“We hope the state government will also pay attention to this problem so that it doesn’t drag on,” he said.
