PETALING JAYA: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof has dismissed a motion to retain him as head of the legislature until Parliament is dissolved.
In a reply to the motion proposer, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Ariff said this was not in line with Standing Order 27.
“As such, I will not allow the motion to be brought to the meeting,” he said in a letter sighted by FMT.
The retired Court of Appeal judge took his oath as Dewan Rakyat speaker on July 16, 2018.
An insider at Mahathir’s party, PPBM, confirmed the matter to FMT.
However, he said the fate of Mahathir’s other motion seeking a vote of no confidence against his successor Muhyiddin Yassin remained unknown.
Mahathir, who is Langkawi MP, had asked the speaker to allow a resolution stating that Muhyiddin does not have the majority support of the 222 MPs to be appointed as prime minister.
He submitted both motions on May 4.
Ariff yesterday rejected a similar proposal by Sabah Chief Minister Shafie Apdal seeking a motion of confidence for Mahathir as having the majority support of MPs.
Mahathir resigned from the top post on Feb 24 on the back of a political crisis that saw Pakatan Harapan’s fall from federal power.
Muhyiddin was appointed prime minister by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on March 1. - FMT
