Tesco ends sourcing chicken from Pedas plant, assures supply adequate

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | Tesco Malaysia has stopped sourcing chicken from a plant in Pedas in Negeri Sembilan after a Covid-19 cluster involving over 60 people has been identified there.
In a statement, Tesco Malaysia spokesperson told Malaysiakini, however, the supermarket chain had an adequate supply of chicken for the Ramadan period and coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
“We were informed on the confirmed cases (by the supplier)... on May 6, and as a preventative measure, we have immediately stopped sourcing from their Pedas Linggi plant until further notice.
“We continue to source for supply of chicken from our other suppliers to ensure stocks remain available for customers in stores throughout this Ramadan and the upcoming Raya period,” the spokesperson said.
It further assured there have been “no close contact” between Tesco staff and employees of the affected supply plant during the duration of the movement control order (MCO).
“Our priority has always been to safeguard the health and safety of our colleagues and customers by ensuring that all social distancing measures are in place throughout our supply chain.
“We continue to closely monitor the health of our colleagues and will be further guided by MOH on this matter,” said Tesco Malaysia.
As of 12pm May 9, 88 cases were traced to the factory, most of which involved foreign workers.
Malaysiakini has contacted the factory for comment and is withholding its identity pending a response.
Besides the factory, there were two new clusters involving foreign workers announced in the past week.
The two clusters involved security guards linked to a Kuala Lumpur shopping mall and a group of construction workers in Setia Alam, Selangor.
The Health Ministry said infections were found to spread faster among blue-collar migrant worker communities because they mostly live in cramped accommodations.  - Mkini
