MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker has been appointed as the deputy national unity minister.
This was confirmed by MCA president Wee Ka Siong to Sin Chew Daily.
Government sources told Malaysiakini the swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place next Tuesday at Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur.
“The ceremony will only involve a handful of people given the current circumstances.
“Apart from Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, National Unity Minister Halimah Mohamed Sadique and the ministry's secretary-general will be present,” the sources told Malaysiakini.
However, Ti (photo) could not be reached for comment.
The 58-year-old politician, who holds a law degree from Universiti Malaya, was appointed as a senator in 2018. His term expires next year.
However, senators can be appointed for two three-year terms, which means if Ti is reappointed, his tenure will last until 2024.
Ti also served as a three-term assemblyperson in Pahang.
From 2004 to 2008, he was the elected representative for Teruntum. Prior to this, he was the assemblyperson for Indera Makhota from 1995 to 2004.
Previously, Muhyiddin had appointed Sarawak's Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Tiong King Sing as the deputy national unity minister but the latter rejected the post.
The PDP supreme council later said Tiong was a five-term MP and the post offered to him was incompatible for such a senior politician.
Last month, it was announced that the Bintulu MP had been appointed as the prime minister's special envoy to China with ministerial rank.
Under the Perikatan Nasional government, MCA has one minister and three deputy ministers at present.
Party president Wee Ka Siong is transport minister, deputy president Dr Mah Hang Soon is deputy education minister I, vice-president Lim Ban Hong is deputy international trade and industry minister and Tanjung Piai MP Wee Jeck Seng is deputy primary industries and commodities minister I. - Mkini
