PETALING JAYA: A video clip of a live dog being hung from a tree by its neck, while a man, believed to be its owner, stands next to it is making the rounds on social media.
The incident, captured on a dashcam, is believed to have happened in Banting, Selangor.
In the video, the dog is seen struggling with just its hind legs touching the ground.
A man, believed to be a passenger in the car, is then seen alighting and approaching the owner, triggering a verbal altercation between the two.
At one point, the passenger is heard asking the driver in the car to call the police, to which the man responded by sarcastically saying that, yes, the police should be alerted.
The video, shared on the Facebook page of Malaysian Animal Association, received 1,300 comments and was shared over 2,900 times at press time.
Its president Arie Dwi Andika said he was informed of the matter by a member of the association early on Wednesday (May 5).
"A police report has been lodged. I was told that the man has also been detained by the police," he said.
Arie said he hoped the Veterinary Services Department would take over the case.
"This is to ensure that the welfare of the dog would be taken care off," he said, adding that he was still awaiting information on the status of the dog.
People who commented on the post all expressed disgust at the incident and urged the authorities to take action.
Nahzatul Umairah Ashraf said: "This perpetrator should be jailed. Imagine how the dog must have felt at being treated like that."
Nurul Shafiqah said: "Look at how that dog was suffering. This person really is cruel."
Netizen Amirul Zolkapaly urged the authority to review existing laws on animal abuse, while Muhammad Azaman Jumuddin thanked the man in the video for interfering and saving the dog. - Star
