CHINI POLLS | Bersatu will not be contesting in the coming July 4 Chini state by-election.
“The decision was made so as to provide full support for the candidate decided upon by BN to represent Perikatan Nasional (PN),” Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said in a statement.
The camp belonging to disputed Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad will also not be putting up a candidate.
This followed Pakatan Harapan’s decision not to contest after PKR said it was not fielding a candidate.
Mahathir’s political secretary Abu Bakar Yahya (below) said Chini is considered PKR’s quota of seat allocation within the Harapan coalition.
“No (fielding of candidate), the seat is under PKR quota... to date, there is none (no discussion on contesting)” he told Malaysiakini today.
On June 6, PKR announced it was not contesting the seat which is considered a BN stronghold. It falls under the Pekan parliamentary constituency held by former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
The party secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail cited concern for the health and safety of voters in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Umno had said it would be announcing its candidate tomorrow.
The Chini seat fell vacant after the incumbent, Umno’s Abu Bakar Harun, 60, died from a heart attack last month.
Abu Bakar garnered 10,027 votes to win the seat in GE14 with a 4,622 majority against PAS’ Mohd Fadhil Noor Abdul Karim and PKR’s Mohamad Razali Ithnain.
Nomination day is slated for June 20 while early voting is on June 30.
