Genting cuts 3,000 jobs due to pandemic, says report

Malaysiakini

Genting Malaysia Berhad (GENM) had cut 3,000 jobs which accounted for 15 percent of the casino giant's total workforce in a bid to weather the Covid-19 pandemic, reported Bloomberg.
The report quoted sources familiar with the matter and revealed that the dismissal process had already started.
Genting, which hired more than 20,000 staff as of 2019, had earlier offered a pay reduction to its employees. That was reportedly the first-ever group-wide salary cut since the conglomerate was founded over half a century ago, in 1965.
When contacted, a Genting official urged the news portal to refer to a statement issued on May 22.
On May 22, GENM announced that it was undertaking a restructuring exercise at its home operations including voluntary pay cuts and "rightsizing its workforce". The company, however, did not reveal the number of job losses back then.
While the government allowed most activities to resume since the recovery movement control order (MCO) began on June 10, the gaming property of Genting and other services remained closed.
It was reported that Berjaya Sports Toto Bhd, Magnum Bhd, and Pan Malaysia Pools Sdn Bhd would resume operations today.
GENM suffered a net loss of RM417.96 million in the first quarter of 2020 due to the temporary disruptions to its worldwide operations caused by Covid-19.
Yesterday, GENM announced that Resorts World Kijal in Terengganu and Resorts World Langkawi would reopen tomorrow.
However, Resorts World Genting and Resorts World Awana would remain closed until further notice. - Mkini
