Bersatu supreme council meets amid tight security, Dr M's faction present

PETALING JAYA: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia began its first supreme council meeting without Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pic) amid tight security, away from its party headquarters.
A few supreme council members aligned to Dr Mahathir were also present. Among them were Tareq Ismail, Akramsyah Muamar Ubaidah Sanusi and Youth information chief Ulya Aqamah Husamudin.
Akramsyah was sacked by party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin from the supreme council two days ago.
The meeting at the University Malaya Alumni Association in Damansara, which began at about 8.30pm on Thursday (June 4), was chaired by Muhyiddin, who is also Prime Minister and acting party chairman.
It was also attended by newly appointed Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, who is also the Home Minister.
No agenda of the meeting was announced.
The supreme council meeting was initially postponed on May 11, before the letters were issued to Dr Mahathir and four other top party leaders stating that they had ceased to be members after they sat with the opposition in Parliament on May 18.
Dr Mahathir and the four protested that the meeting was illegal then.
Earlier, supreme council member Datuk A. Kadir Jasin said he refused to attend the meeting because he considered it "invalid" without Dr Mahathir as he deemed the former PM as chairman.- Star
