Pekan Umno rep and rogue Bersatu leader to face off in Chini polls

Malaysiakini

CHINI POLLS | BN has announced Pekan Umno committee member Mohd Sharim Md Zain as their candidate for the Chini by-election.
The announcement was made by Pahang Menteri Besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail at an event today that was also attended by Pekan Umno chief Najib Abdul Razak.
In his speech, Wan Rosdy said he had given the former prime minister, who is also Pekan MP, the full mandate to choose who should contest the Chini seat.
Previously, it was speculated that Najib's son Mohd Nizar Najib, who is the Pekan Umno Youth chief, was among the candidates considered.
Wan Rosdy said all the speculated candidates were qualified and should not be disheartened if they were not picked.
The Pahang menteri besar, in touting Sharim's credentials, highlighted the 41-year-old's previous involvement in youth groups including Felda and Pahang youth councils.
His profile according to Umno Online, also states that he was previously an officer to incumbent Chini assemblyperson Abu Bakar Harun, who died from a heart attack last month.
Pakatan Harapan and both Bersatu factions will not be fielding a candidate.
However, Pekan Bersatu deputy-chief Zainul Hisham Tengku Hussin announced he would be contesting the by-election as an independent.
He said he made the decision after discussions with party comrades, supporters and the Chini Felda settlers.
"Since I made up my mind, my supporters and I will face whatever possible consequences (including being sacked by Bersatu)," he was quoted as saying by Sin Chew Daily.
"I joined Bersatu to combat corruption. If the party wants me to help them, then I will challenge corruption by standing as an independent candidate," he added.
Blogger Mohd Shukri Mohd Ramli had also expressed plans to contest as an independent.
Abu Bakar garnered 10,027 votes to win the seat in GE14 with a 4,622 vote-majority against PAS’ Mohd Fadhil Noor Abdul Karim and PKR’s Mohamad Razali Ithnain.
Nomination day is slated for June 20 while early voting is on June 30. - Mkini
