Tanjung Malim MCA has announced its intention to continue contesting the Tanjung Malim parliamentary seat despite objections by Umno.
"MCA will continue to defend the Tanjung Malim parliamentary seat as it is a traditional MCA seat, and we will continue to field our candidate," said Tanjung Malim MCA division chief Goh Choong Seng.
He added, however, that the matter cannot be fully determined by a division chief and the final decision on candidate selection will be left to the prerogative of the central leadership.
Goh's statement came after Umno Tanjung Malim division chief Khusairi Talib urged MCA deputy president Mah Hang Soon to look elsewhere for a constituency to contest in the next general election.
Mah, who is now a senator and deputy education minister in the Perikatan Nasional government, was chosen as a candidate for the parliamentary seat in GE14. He was defeated by PKR’s Chang Lih Kang by 5,358 votes.
Khusairi accused Mah of being a traitor for visiting a former Umno leader who defected to Bersatu, and for sending a hamper and RM100 in 'duit raya' to several Umno branch chiefs in a bid "to buy their souls."
The Umno division chief also claimed that Mah was still in the running to contest the seat in the next election, which he said was evident from Mah's attempts to appease Tanjong Malim MCA's newly elected leaders.
He declared that 60 out of 63 Umno branches in Tanjong Malim had approved a motion for Umno to contest the Tanjung Malim seat, instead of MCA, in the 15th general election.
Meanwhile, Goh said that despite being defeated at the 14th General Election, his party still continued to serve the people.

"MCA has never sidelined the rakyat nor voters in this constituency despite being defeated at GE14," he said.
"On the contrary, we pursued our daily work and served this area unceasingly the day after polling, and we continue to operate our service centre at Slim River all this while," he added. - Mkini
