The nation's oldest Malay language newspaper Utusan Malaysia, which ceased operation last year over financial problems, is expected to return next month.
Its website showed an animated teaser which read: "Await the unveiling (nantikan)... this July. Brought to you by Media Mulia Sdn Bhd."
Media Mulia is purportedly linked to tycoon Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary, whose company Aurora Mulia owns shares in Media Prima Bhd.
Malaysiakini has learned that Utusan's new office is based at the New Straits Times Press (NSTP) headquarters at Jalan Riong, Bangsar.
Media Prima is also the parent company of the NSTP which publishes three newspapers namely the New Straits Times, Berita Harian, and Harian Metro.
A source within the company said the employees in the revived newspaper consisted of old and new faces, with an estimation of less than 200 employees.
"Some employees from the old company have been rehired but the top management consists of new faces.
"The paper will be available in both digital and print versions," said the source.
For the record, Utusan Group had 815 employees before terminating their services on Oct 31 last year.
In November last year, the then entrepreneurship development minister Redzuan Yusof announced that Utusan would be relaunched in early 2020.
He said that the paper would help disseminate information on the (government’s) policy implementation.
Three months later, the company had actively started looking for candidates to take up numerous positions as posted on the Utusan Online Facebook page.
Utusan was first published in Jawi in 1939 before it switched to romanised Malay in 1967.
The paper had been running at a loss since 2012.
In October last year, the then Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Bhd executive chairperson Abdul Aziz Sheikh Fadzir said the company was no longer solvent and that brought the dismissal of all its employees. - Mkini
