Rude shock for Indian community in Kuala Kedah

 

THE Hindu community in Kedah is taken aback by the demolition of a second temple in the state within six months, Makkal Osai reported.

The Sri Raja Muniswarar Temple in Taman Bersatu, Kuala Kedah, that is believed to be over 50 years old, was torn down by the Alor Setar City Council on Tuesday.

It was said that the council sent an eviction order to the temple in July. Although temple administrators immediately began efforts to register the temple, this was reportedly rejected.

According to reports, the demolition was supposedly carried out despite a meeting with council officials over a possible relocation site.

Devotees and action committee members who received news of the demolition date went to the temple and worked to remove the statues of the deities, said a local activist R. Kannusamy.

In July, the council tore down a century-old shrine in Jalan Keretapi.

The historic site, which was used by Indian labourers working on the Malayan railway during the colonial days as a place of worship, was later turned into a motorcycle parking lot. - Star
