Adib's death: Lawyer calls AG to give 'complete and transparent' explanation

Prominent criminal lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla has called for Attorney-General Idrus Harun to come up with a decision on the death case of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim.

In an open letter to the country's top legal officer, Haniff (photo, above) said it had been over a month since Idrus reportedly promised to come up with a decision on the 2019 case.

"As you are aware, as of the date of this letter, it has been more than two years and four months since the death of Adib. It has also been more than a year and six months since the Coroner's Court issued its inquest finding on Sept 29, 2019, and more than a month and a half since your last statement saying that your office would make a conclusive decision.

"However, all the parties that are affected, including Adib's family and the majority of concerned Malaysians, are still waiting for the answer.

"In humbleness, I would like to state here that, should the police in their investigation really could not identify any individuals who caused the death of Adib, or if the identified persons cannot be arrested for any physical reasons whatsoever, then a complete and transparent explanation from your office should suffice to be accepted by Adib's family and concerned Malaysians," he said in the letter.

Haniff said a conclusive closure would at least give some peace to the hearts and minds of those affected, rather than being left without any answers.

He said a copy of the open letter had been sent to Idrus' office.

Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim

Adib, 24, was a member of the Emergency Medical Rescue Services unit from the Subang Jaya Fire and Rescue Station who sustained serious injuries during a commotion at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ 25, Subang Jaya, on Nov 27, 2018.

He succumbed to his injuries and died while receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute on Dec 17, 2018.

The inquest was called following a dispute over Adib's cause of death, whether it was due to an accident or a deliberate attack.

On Sept 27, 2019, the Shah Alam Coroner's Court ruled that Adib's death was due to a criminal act by more than two or three unidentified persons.

However, to date, no one has been arrested and charged with the alleged murder. - Mkini
