KOTA KINABALU: Community leaders have to play their respective roles in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19 especially in the remote interior areas.
Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said village chiefs and Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) chairmen have to keep abreast of the current situation and help the government care for the people.
Commenting on the Covid-19 cluster which broke out in Nabawan following a raft of social gatherings, Masidi said cooperation from local leaders and village chiefs can help the government ensure that people adhere to the existing standard operating procedures.
"They must also raise awareness within their respective communities on the importance of living with the new normal," he said during a press conference on the state's Covid-19 situation.
The Sinsingon cluster in Nabawan spawned from a mass gathering which took place at a funeral in Kampung Sinsingon. Infections have since spread to five villages in the Nabawan, Beaufort and Kota Kinabalu districts.
The cluster now has 177 reported Covid-19 cases.
Nabawan, which is about a four-hour drive from the state capital, has since been placed under Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) until March 16.
Sabah today recorded 104 new cases with one death each in the Tenom and Keningau districts. - NST
